    Presumably he used this for practising when traveling. He used many superb violins during his career: see www.benningviolins.com/the-violins-of-jascha-heifetz.html

Popular Science Oct 1925, page 45 (lower left) books.google.com/books?id=0CcDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA45&lp... has a photo of Heifetz with his "violin-cane." In French, the term "canne violon" is used. Apparently he had picked it up on his recent trip to Europe for $400.
