Other NYT articles give him as Alfred or give his middle initial as F!! A directory of famous freemasons has a brief bio at books.google.com/books?id=ZvBjhJr9Ev0C&pg=RA1-PA199&a... and has him as Albert H. Hawley. But this is all hypothesis. No pictures for confirmation.

  Another possibility, compare the photos: More likely a native New Jersey man like me, and a member of the Early Birds of Aviation, for which I have been writing biographies in Wikipedia for. I believe he became president of the Aero Club of America in 1913, I will have to check my paper files. You will have to compare the images to see if you think they match too. Alan Ramsay Hawley (July 29, 1869 – February 16, 1938) was one of the early aviators in the United States. In 1910 he won the Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race with his balloon America II, aided by his friend and fellow aviator Augustus Post. After landing in the wilderness in Quebec, Canada they spent a week traveling back to civilization before they were able to send a telegram.   I don't think that this is Alan R. Hawley. There is a photo of him in the Bisbee daily review., October 15, 1910, Image 1 and I believe it's another person.

  Another source about Alan Ramsay Hawley, the aviator, is in www.hawleysociety.org/alan-ramsay-hawley-2/. Considering the photo on that page it seems to be the same man as on the Bain photograph though.
