  I'll bet this man called himself a farrier rather than a blacksmith.

  Look at the calkins on the shoes! [the heels of the iron horsehoes] these were meant to give traction when hauling heavy loads, but could cause problems by throwing the foot off balance. Great looking horse, though-I love the dapples.
