Sam Schepps was a witness in the Becker case according to news reports. The Becker Case was the murder of a gambler, Rosenthal, by gangsters at behest of policeman Charles Becker. Schepps was thought to be the "paymaster" of the murderers, giving them the $100 bills that enabled them to get out of town. There are many other photographs relating to the Becker case strewn throughout the LOC Bain Collection set - many of them having the words "Gunmen trial" included in the original caption. This makes me wonder if the photograph of "Mrs. Belmont at Gunmen's trial" here: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2496407997/ was also taken at that particular trial.
