    My father was a cook in the Army in the mid 1930's. I have the cookbook he used. I imagine this picture was about WWI era but it could well have been dad's era too. Not much difference. He road a horse and set up field kitchens. OK I see it is listed in the 1910's.

    I don't have a garden to produce vegetables for canning, but I do can chicken stock or beef stock. Home canning is not as widespread as it used to be, but it's still common enough that my local large drugstore carries canning supplies.

    My mom and dad used to stay up very late at night canning food from our garden. This was after a full days work. They used an old pressure cooker to seal the jars. The results were delicious.
