  27 April 1898 was a Wednesday.

  They have taken down the prominent end bay on the right (which matched the bay on the left) to insert two new bays, and then rebuilt the demolished stone into a new end bay on the right. Five bays (archways) became seven bays (archways).

  @ State Records - surely not "from George Street"? Wonderfully spooky to be able to date this to the nearest minute - 11:40 am on 4 April 1898. I bothered to look it up and it was a Monday - almost time for lunch!

  You are quite right, beachcomberaustralia, it's not George Street at all! I have updated the text to "showing Martin Place." Thanks for pointing that out. Almost time for lunch and just before the lunch rush! There's a post on our Archives Outside blog called Using shadows to date photographs which you might find interesting.
