Great continuity in subject matter and shots Carol, this does illustrate the fact that the building was gutted in the fire. That bell on the shot next door is really impressive, I'd say many a man and woman stood under that to dodge the rain on soft spring days?

It's also pretty impressive that the facade remains intact. I wonder if it was supported by a steel girder... I'm not sure how often such building techniques would have been employed in provinical Irish cities in at the turn of the century

The Granville Hotel is still there, and now includes all of the burnt-out site.

I was wondering what a giant bell was doing outside a Chemist's, until I saw the sign down below the window!

The two hand-powered fire pumps are marked with the War Department broad arrow. They look similar to this Tilley fire engine. www.cambsfire.gov.uk/news/Archive/2103.php Two rows of men stood either side and worked the handles up and down like a seesaw.

A superb and incredibly interesting image - thank you for sharing this. A wonderful feat of civil engineering - how on earth did 'they' get those cranes to the top of the structure? Richard

This picture is taken within the "HIgh Girders" the track as you can see runs within the girders. The track was positioned above the approach girders leading to this point.

I'm sorry, but isn't the date incorrect? If this photo truly was taken before the collapse, then it couldn't have been taken at any time after December 28, 1879.
