It looks like Sydney Harbour (not a river as in the title) looking west towards Balmoral/Mosman, taken from Darley Road in Manly, somewhere near where the Manly Hospital now is. I have been trying to find the house on Google Maps without luck.

Is the slide image in the correct orientation? The "54" in the top corner is backwards.

The image is correct msmichls01. A lot of these glass negatives have writing on the reverse of the plates (see Persistent URL). I imagine it is something to do with the cataloguing system of the photographer, and would not have shown up in a cropped print or framing mount.

This photo was taken from Osborne Road,Manly looking south-west down an unmade Marshall Street to Wood St. and out over Little Manly Cove(not Spring Cove) with Manly Point(then known as Smedley's Point )and Sydney Harbour in the background.The Little Manly Wharf c1887,the Council gas lamp in Osborne Rd. and the grand houses,Ashbourne c 1890(cnr Wood and Marshall Sts),Uyeno c1883 and Maretimo c1885-86(both in Addison Road)help date the photo to around 1900-1910.
