I think Mr French / Lawrence made a distinction with this photo, calling it "Barrack" in the small white print bottom left, when the other 'similar items' refer to "Depot". Was this the dormitory for the R.I.C. officers or cadets? Streetview - www.google.com.au/maps/@53.3523713,-6.2999991,3a,60.6y,69... which shows double windows where there is one in the photo (see note).

It's not entirely clear on the 25" OSI, but it looks like it may be part of the complex next door.

The DIA has two entries. The main one is for the RIC Police Depot, now Garda HQ, but there is also this 1894 ref. to a Metropolitan police barrack.

At this page from a guidebook to the Park there is a pic with a caption: Closing of Parkgate garda station circa 1930. The station had been a DMP barracks. left to right back row Sgt Thomas Keaveney plain clothes, gárdai Flynn, Thornton, McMahon (plain clothes), Delaney. Front row Park Ranger John Manning salutes Sgt Thomas Kelly. Note old DMP-style pointed helmets and the new flat Garda hat worn by the gárdai. The plain clothes gárdai constituted a vice squad for the park

The open windows suggest a warm day, even a scorcher. Not the sort of day to be standing sentry in a heavy uniform buttoned to the throat.

The uniforms look to dark to be army I'd be inclined to think that they are R.I.C. police officers and the building in the background is what we now know as Garda HQ in the pheonix park check out this link archiseek.com/2010/1842-garda-headquarters-phoenix-park-d... The exterior design of the building is a match and cheching on Google the gate posts appear to be the same also

Hmmm, must have asked their nearly blind aunties to hem up their trousers, because they are all different lengths. For some unknown reason the twelfth Garda Recruit from the left has had his uniform faded . . . maybe to identify him or single him out from the rest. It would be good to determine names of each and then know what part they played in the history of Ireland. The purpose of "Dress Right Dress" command, is to make a near perfect rank of troops. Then the second command, which does not look like it was executed is to "Cover", behind the man in front, done by extending one's arm, to just touch his shoulder, this makes each rank equidistant from the other. This is typically done for inspection and marching and parades, etc.

There’s a British Pathé video of about the same date (January 1923) showing the Civic Guards in Training. In fact it may even be the same occasion, see from around 00:45.

They only became the Garda Síochána later in 1923, according to Wikipedia. At this point they were still called the Civic Guards.
