Civil War veterans George H. Cake, Sgt. Newell Kinsman, Cpl. John M. Turrill and Capt. E. B. Strong are buried at the Santa Ana Cemetery in Santa, Ana, California, according to findagrave.com. This indicates that this photo pertains to the General John Sedgwick GAR Post No. 17 of Santa Ana, California.

Thank you for finding their full names, Doug!

There's a nearly identical monument to the GAR in the heart of Washington, DC.

The black-and-white photo appears to be of a mock-up for a monument, not the monument itself. The elements of the design are queerly uncentered. I wonder if a copy of the monument even exists at Gettysburg, or if Bain simply appropriated this photo, copied it, and added it to his Gettysburg file to satisfy subscribers?

According to the Wikipedia biography of the sculptor J. Massey Rhind, his works on view at Gettysburg are limited to four statues of individuals. Wikipedia credits Rhind as designer of the GAR monument at Washington (in 1909), but says nothing about there being a copy of it at Gettysburg: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Massey_Rhind
