Hi Gluecrue. There was indeed much controversy in his day as to whether Frederick Cook was the first person to reach the North Pole, or in fact did at all. The discussion surrounding Cook's activities (and Robert Peary, another Arctic explorer claiming to have reached the Pole) was widely covered by the newspapers during this time, and, if you're interested, can be explored further by searching for these men in the Chronicling America web site.
