    Hi Gluecrue. There was indeed much controversy in his day as to whether Frederick Cook was the first person to reach the North Pole, or in fact did at all. The discussion surrounding Cook's activities (and Robert Peary, another Arctic explorer claiming to have reached the Pole) was widely covered by the newspapers during this time, and, if you're interested, can be explored further by searching for these men in the Chronicling America web site.     The icebergs shown on this photograph are probably the same as the ones shown on an illustration in the book published by De Gerlache ('Quinze Mois dans l'Antartique'). De Gerlache dates the illustration as March 1899, thus this photo is likely to have been taken at that moment, too.
