Oh, when I read photo title I thought it referred to Francisco I. Madero, but no, it's his brother, Raúl, who join to Pancho Villa's revolutionary forces. He died at 94, in 1982. I didn't know, but was interesting investigate that!

"THE COURTHOUSE.
Todays Court House and Heritage Centre now stands where an original building was built in 1735 as a barracks to accommodate a half company of soldiers but was also used also as a Court House from these early days. In the early part of the 19th century a Revenue Office was opened here and then during the famine an overflow of 120 people from the Work House were housed in the upper third story of the building.
During the same era General Sessions of the Peace were held in June and December and Petty Sessions the first Monday in every fortnight. A special court was also held every three weeks for the recovery of debts not exceeding ten pounds.
The building was burned down during 1920 and rebuilt and opened again in 1927. ..."

The hills look Kerryesque...

Mike I think Woesinger is right in the notes, that struck me as a tidal area past the last of the houses and the feel I got from it was as Niall McAuley says, very Kerryesque. Were they firkins of butter I wonder or barrels of stout? Nice photograph and the keystone image is very unusual.

I've a feeling this is Castletownbere.... Not quite the same viewpoint, but the layout and pub is similar. maps.google.ie/?ll=51.651525,-9.910526&spn=0.007003,0... Corroborating evidence (which is what put me on to Castletownbere) - in 1901, there was a Daniel Moriarty, shopkeeper, living in Castletownbere. On further investigation, he did indeed own a public house. www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Killaconen... Very circumstantial, but the layout of the town, the background and the pub seem to match.

Woesinger That looks very like it alright. The estuary appears closer in the old shot but it looks just right. Is that Kingstons on the left of the picture? Perhaps we can verify it from that?
