MPF1/68 Ireland, by John Goghe 1567

    Fascinating ...

Anyone know why it is called 'The Spanish Sea' twenty years before the Spanish Armada (1588) ?
  • Cha Shee said:
Made just before the Desmondite rebellion in Munster. No coincidence Cecil’s fingerprints are on this map. Note how little the cartographer knew about Ulster, the Gaelic stronghold until the battle of Kinsale, where the Spaniards sailed leaving their Irish allies to trek the length of the country in mid-winter. Spanish sea indeed!

GoogleMapsStreetView - goo.gl/maps/ZaQcC1BZxjbsZvQD7 Chapel Street seems to be wider now; I hope the houses on the left (and the folk) were not washed away.
