Great photo. Took me a while to see the guys on the roof. Is that a black man on the far right of the group? Those water wheels are moving at a pretty good rate. I know it's a long exposure, but even so. My family were involved in the "http://www.offalyhistory.com/articles/83/1/Tanyard-Lane-Its-place-in-the-economic-history-of-Tullamore/Page1.html" target="_blank">brewing and distilling business in nearby Tullamore back in the 18th century. The Manlys were the predecessors of the Goodbodys and were in Tullamore from at least the 1740s. Members of the family are recalled in Thomas (Manly) Street and Henry (Manly) Street. I know they also owned a brewery in Moate, but can't find any other information. It's possible they also had involvement in Kilbeggan.

That's the huge brick chimney at right, I think we are looking South.

I wouldn't rule out south but the shadows look more as if we're looking east.

Distillery street seems to be named for the Royal Irish Distillery (judging by the map), which according to the internet included the Dunville brand.

Anyone know what kind of barrels those are behind the two small boys? They look like something for fruit, but they seem to be open-topped. Were they ordered specifically?

Maybe the cooperage made these wooden buckets just for sale and they weren't destined for a life of drink (in the distillery)?!

Thanks, they look like laundry basins or, as you say, buckets. I suppose they could have been used in various ways, from providing water for animals to scrubbing floors. No plastics back then, lucky sods!

This is a bit speculative, but the a search of the 1901 census for coopers in Killarney says most lived on Boherkeale Glebe. The OSI 25" shows trees on the right of that lane looking North. Streetview is patchy in these little lanes, but I think this streetview is a reverse view along that lane, which would, at the time the shot above was taken, have shown the photographer in the distance, and that horses rear in the foreground.
