Innovation in the 1920s. This may be a photo of the first attempt(/s) at in-flight refueling. I can't find others from this effort at Library of Congress.

There is alleged to be a cleaner photo of the first attempt on Wikimedia. It's over 2000 pixels on a side.

US Army Air Service aviator, William C. Ocker, later known as the "Father of Instrument Flying," piloting a De Havilland DH-4B carrying the then Chief of the Air Service, Maj. Gen. Charles T. Menoher in the rear cockpit. Menoher, a non-aviator and former commander of the Army's 42nd (Rainbow) Division, was appointed to the post soon after the conclusion of World War I. He'd leave the Air Service in October 1921 for a subsequent regular Army post, after growing tensions with his assistant, air power advocate Gen. William "Billy" Mitchell.
