That is the USS Prairie (AD-5) captured in this photo along with the Curtiss NC-1 at Trepassey Bay, Newfoundland in May 15-16, 1919. (It should also be noted that the photo is reversed - as evidenced by the backwards "1" on the hull of NC-1.) USS Melville (AD-2) was a United States Navy destroyer tender that saw service in both World Wars. Laid down by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation of Camden, New Jersey, on 11 November 1913, she was launched on 2 March 1913, sponsored by Miss Helen W.
