Zeppelins had 2 numbers one was the name the other was the production number. Z8 is right on the photo, so I think this is LZ 23 which on this page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Zeppelins says: Under the same orders as Z VII on 21 August 1914, Z VIII engaged the French army while at an altitude of a few hundred feet. According to Lehmann Z VIII received "thousands of bullets and shell splinters", forcing it to drift and make a forced landing in no man's land near Bandonvillers. The crew destroyed all documents and tried to burn the wreck but so little gas remained it would not burn: the airship crew were captured by the French Army. I would say that matches up with what's represented in the photo. It's a picture after it was captured. I'm not an expert on WWI uniforms but if someone can confirm those, you could better identify this as well.

Thank you very much for this information. I think you might be right so I will edit the title.

I searched for this is I suspected this is not a German Zeppelin type. It happens to be a British anti-submarine airship from the SSZ class of which great numbers were built and used by the RNAS. airshipsonline.com/airships/Technical%20Spec/SSZ%20Airshi... The picture is somewhat tricky as the letters SS. which precede the Z8 are covered by a cloth. Look for instance of a similar picture of SS.Z48 www.bristol2014.com/home/111.html#.VWIugWBBJWF
