Wonderful picture, full of interest, and it reminds me of the Yogi Berra quote, "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." It looks like it was taken from the roof of the Corn Exchange. Reverse view at about the same time - www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/2712343375/ . The Boomerang Hotel (with the enormous gas lantern, evidently required by law) was replaced in 1902 by the current Shellbourne Hotel, which narrows the image date to between 1890-1902. I wonder if the photo was part of the plague survey of 1900, or something to do with the planning of street realignment for the new Pyrmont Bridge, opened in 1902?

The plague albums have many pictures from around this area, and Batson's Lane ( www.flickr.com/photos/state-records-nsw/4403061026/ ) is just up Sussex Street, near the sign "J. Ireland 230" . I think this photo is one of the unpublished plague photos which dates it as 1900.
