Such an unusual shot for a film photograph? It is quite different in its approach and composition to most and very interesting for that reason. I was visiting Galway a lot around then but was more interested in rivers and rugby pitches so I can't help with Mullins but the boy reminds me of myself just a few years earlier.

A butchers shop, I think - so the kid is dreaming of mince. A look at Google maps shows that the building is intact but painted a startling lime green - and home to a creperie called Zatsuma. A creperie in Galway City. Who'd have guessed that in 1964?

John Lord Mince, eh? That's what I get for stereotyping children - thinking of a sweet tooth instead of carnivorous tendencies...

This is as close as I can get in Streetview.
  • National Library of Ireland on The Commons said:
Niall McAuley Oh don't talk to me! Spent a good 5 minutes trying to get the same view - slithering up and down Shop Street, muttering ominously that if Mr O'Dea could do it, then so could I. Shamefacedly gave up, but I am bloodied but unbowed. Virtual sticky bun (hot from the wholly imaginary NLI oven) for anyone who can get the same view in Streetview...

Love, LOVE this photo...what a slice of life. The dog just makes it perfect.

I’m no Galway boffin, but I would say the Church of Ireland St. Nicholas is on the left, one would be looking in the direction of Shop Street? If so the street according to bing.com maps would be Churchyard Street?.

Look at how crisp and clear the shot is for 1905? Beautiful! Like you NLI I noticed the terrier posing for the camera, he's nearly as camera conscious as the kids against the cart!

KölnMike Thank you so much! Now added to Flickr map, plus here's the Google Street View... :)

Think this is a little later than the Egg and Foul Market given the growth in the tree on the right. But not much. Egg and Fowl is circa 1905 so I would say 1906 or 07 at 12.12 PM some day

DannyM8 Well, circa 1905 on the Egg and Fowl Market was speculative... Never firmly established.

National Library of Ireland on The Commons Understand that. But think this is a little older
  • DannyM8 said:
Think this might be the Egg and Fowl Market also?

DannyM8 Deffo geese, etc. lying on the ground...
