This is probably Episcopalian Bishop Chauncey Bunce Brewster (1848-1941), subject of this very wordy 1942 biography available from the Internet Archive. He was descended from a William Brewster, a Pilgrim Elder who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620. In 1868 he graduated from Yale (where he was a member of the secret Skull and Bones society) and received an MA in 1871. Granted deacon's orders at Berkeley Divinity School in 1872, he served in churches in Connecticut, Michigan, New York, and Maryland before being named Bishop Coadjutor of Connecticut in 1897, the same year he received a Doctorate of Divinity from Trinity College. He was the Bishop of Connecticut from 1899 to 1928. Yale's Brewster Hall is named for him.

whyaduck Good bit of research there.
I don't know anything about this man but I thought he looked Anglican.

Yes, great find, whyaduck. The frontispiece photo in the book could certainly be the same man when older. He was in the news in 1913, see query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9F0DE7DE1730E233A... It appears he wanted less work. However the assistant appointed refused the position. Someone else had refused the year before!! The same article notes that he officiated at the funeral of J. Piermont Morgan. This batch of Bain photos has several pictures of the funeral, so maybe this portrait is a photo used or on hand for coverage of that event.

Is his family the family that settled on Cape Cod? My guess is, it is.

At right, a Fire Escape Station lamp post. The ladder is against the wall of the church, behind the railings.
