POINT OF INFORMATION On Wednesday 31st January 2018 the NLI Flickr Photostream with all the research and information gathered will be archived. The Irish Web has been archived by the NLI over the past several years and this has led to the archiving of the photostream. "An oast, oast house or hop kiln is a building designed for kilning (drying) hops as part of the brewing process. They can be found in most hop-growing (and former hop-growing) areas and are often good examples of vernacular architecture. ... They consist of a rectangular one or two storey building (the "stowage") and one or more kilns in which the hops were spread out to be dried by hot air rising from a wood or charcoal-fired below. The drying floors were thin and perforated to permit the heat to pass through and escape through a cowl in the roof which turned with the wind. I've added a note above on what is now Mountmellick Community Arts Centre. It used to be an art deco cinema...
The local community arts centre, a 450 seater restored art deco cinema, hosts many a play or concert throughout the year. It is also home to the Mountmellick Drama Festival which occurs every March which bring the very best in Irish amateur drama to Mountmellick. The Balcony cinema also located in the Community Arts Centre is a 134 seater theatre that hosts weekly cinema screenings. This is a great opportunity to catch a classic movie for €5 in an amazing art deco theatre.
