May 04, 1931, Page B-4, Image 20 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045462/1931-05-04/ed-... has a schedule that says the coronation of Queen Shenandoah VIII was to be at 3pm on Tuesday, which would be May 5, 1931

Thanks for the links swanq . I located a pretty thorough description of the festivities. The coronation would have been on May 5th, but festival also covered the 6th and ended with a evening ball. Byrd, who was born in Winchester, was very famous at this point so it's not surprising there are lots of people gathered to see the festival.

There are three dates written on the negative by the Bain News Service. Such dates may represent when a photo was taken or when it was later published. Hence, the photo must have been taken on or before the earliest date written, 7/28/23. See Evening star.
