She was engaged in social work on a large scale, as a district leader of both North and South Carolina. Her husband was a wealthy cotton manufacturer who owned mills, warehouses and water power in the vicinity of Spray, N. C. Mebane also was a breeder of Hereford cattle. Mr. Mebane was a confidant and correspondent of Booker T. Washington, advising him that the negro needed to develop an economic stake in the cotton crop, to become more than a mere cotton picker or mill hand.

Some backstory (NYT, May 23, 1916) on Cowles and the campaign to elect her (a Californian) to the presidency at the convention, including this catchy slogan:
