This is a photo of the Ellis Square market in Savanah, Georgia, which opened June 1872 and closed October 1953 to make room for a 199-car public garage.

Anger over the demolition of the old market was a boon to the historic preservation movement in Savannah, however. When the garage’s 50-year lease expired at the end of 2004, the city voted to replace it with a 4-level, 691-space underground garage beneath a restored Ellis Square. The garage was knocked down in 2006 and new construction commenced in 2007.
