O Mac Good morning.

I haven't found anything about it online - nothing at the NIAH or DIA, I don't even see a close-up photo where the inscription can be read.

Well it's not Malahide (though it looks a bit like it), so I'd guess Rathgar/Terenure if it's Dublin

Looking at the two preceding photos in the catalogue, it doesn't look much like Dublin. This one especially: catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000303327 - those aren't Dublin chimneys. Well, they might be, but they're a bit fancier than my previous guess - more like Donnybrook.

They all say County Dublin, though, which suggests Bray or Dalkey or similar.

Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection I prefer the original name for the locality - "Church Hill". Named because it was the location of St Philip' (Church of England/Anglican) Ist and 2nd locations, St Patrick's (Roman Catholic) and Scot's Churches - Lang park was named after a prominent churchman, not the later Labor Premier as many believe. It's a pity the name has slipped from the City's attention and use. I have added "Church Hill" as a tag!

John Cowper There was also a Wesleyan Church a little way north on Princes Street. Sorry to lower the tone with the pissoir note, but they were an interesting, very necessary, and often overlooked part of the city's history. There can't be too many period photos of them around.

beachcomber australia Not lowering the tone at all - there's a loo on the same corner now! I'd forgotten about the Wesleyan Chapel.

When I worked for the Sydney City Council, a pissoir was delivered to their workshop at the corner of William Henry Street & Wattle Street Ultimo. It would have been around about the mid 70's. It had been damaged, and needed some repairs. Being made of cast iron it needed to be braze welded. At that time, not knowing of such a thing as a pissoir existed, I found it quite interesting. I remember a boilermaker saying that when he used his oxy-acetylene torch on the metal, a very unpleasant smell was produced. Many years of use, boiling off out of the metal, I suppose.

beachcomber australia and antony stuart I took a picture of a pissoir situated in Observatory Park, overlooking Kent Street in 1963 or 1964 (I remember because I borrowed a camera from a colleague at work to take it - I think he thought me most strange!) at the time I was working in Caltex House at 167 Kent Street. Like most bower birds I can safely say 'it's here somewhere!' When I locate it among my photos (not all are sorted nor scanned!) I'll post it on Filckr. I remember I was very proud of the outcome at the time.
