Why do I think that the cat is not long for this world? Lunch, perhaps?

The sign above and to left of cooky shows ferry prices in cents. Given the age of the photo that puts it outside Australia, New Zealand, or any of our near neighbours because we and they had pounds, shillings and pence before 1966. Most likely would be USA or Canada, and we can see some snow on the background mountain. At the bottom of the sign are the words "Douglas" and "Juneau", so this is either at Juneau, Alaska or Douglas Alaska or within a ferry's journey distance of those 2 places. Having a bit of a look at online images, I see that Juneau was a very busy port in first half of 20th century, and the City of Douglas on Douglas Island was somewhat less busy. Not much development in the background of this photo, so more likely to be Douglas than Juneau. In 1935 the Juneau to Douglas bridge opened, making ferry travel less of a big thing. Perhaps that dates this photo image to before 1935, perhaps not.

BobMeade Nice work, one can also see the word Treadwell and there was a mine of that name operating in Alaska between 1881 and 1922. This is an extract from Wiki: "The Treadwell gold mine was on the north side of Douglas Island, .5-mile (0.80 km) east of downtown Douglas and southeast of downtown Juneau, owned and operated by John Treadwell." That pillar would be called a mooring post by most boat people:-)

A man named Dan Tachet is described as "presiding over the commissary" on Sierra Club outings in the 1920s and 1930s. Ansel Adams made a portrait of him on one such outing. www.andrewsmithgallery.com/exhibitions/anseladams/sierra_... He's credited as Chef Dan Tachet of Castaneda in Las Vegas in this set of recipes in a 1910 magazine (albondigas soup, enchiladas, etc.): books.google.com/books?id=dP1KAAAAYAAJ&lpg=RA3-PA77&a...

www.thehighsierra.org/portraits.htm has a picture of him as an older man, probably in 1931. See www.thehighsierra.org/mountaineering_summer_1931.htm And emuseum.icp.org/view/objects/asitem/People$00402143/0/pri... claims to be a 1929 portrait by Ansel Adams.

Thank you both so very much for your research. I wonder if Adams took this photo, as well as the the one in the collection at the Andrew Smith Gallery. We can certainly add some of the information to the record the next time we update.
