[1] [2] Ben Stahl and his wife, Ella, first moved to Sarasota, Florida from Connecticut in 1953. They were two of the best-known and most-admired members of Sarasota's lively colony of artists and writers in the 1950's and 60's. Ella Stahl was a model, an actress, a mother and a renowned artist. "For 30 years, Ben Stahl's work and the work of illustrator Norman Rockwell were featured weekly in The Saturday Evening Post and other national magazines. Along with Rockwell's, Stahl's illustrations were among the Post's best known features. "We are but illustrators, but you among the masters, and I am filled with admiration" Rockwell wrote in a letter to Ben Stahl." [3] Jerry Farnsworth developed a world-renowned reputation as a portrait painter. During WWI he studied at the Corcoran School of Art while stationed in Washington, D.C. He then continued his education under Charles Hawthorne (1872-1930) at the Cape Cod School of Art during the nineteen-teens and met fellow student Helen Alton Sawyer, whom he would marry in 1925. His subjects included men of great fame – Presidents Truman, Roosevelt and Harding were among his sitters – yet his depictions of common people remain the most praised. [4]
