Golden Circle began operations in 1947 after construction of the main canning factory at Northgate was completed. The new facility was opened by the then Premier of Queensland, the Hon Edward Hanlon. The company was originally called 'Queensland Tropical Fruit Products', with 'Golden Circle' used as their brand name. Golden Circle was initially part of the Committee of Direction of Fruit Marketing in Queensland (COD). Under the leadership of Bernard Flewell-Smith and Percival Savage, the cannery was established as a separate business. It was split off from the COD by an amendment to the Fruit Marketing Organisation Acts. Initially, the company processed and canned pineapples and produced fruit jams. Pineapples have been at the heart of the Golden Circle brand since its earliest beginnings. Salmon Cannery at Astoria – Then & Now (100 years later)

Resting on the 100 year-old pilings that formerly supported the Union Fisherman's Cooperative Packing Company is the forty-six unit Cannery Pier Hotel – extending 600 feet into the Columbia River.

Built in 1897, the Union Fisherman's Cooperative Packing Company processed and canned salmon, tuna, and various other Northwest fish, and became the salmon canning capital of the world. It remained a fishermen-owned business until the late 1940's, and much of the architecture of the original cannery building has been retained. [1]

A friend and I worked at this cannery summer of 1954..........Sometime in the last couple years it has been torn down we noticed when we drove by a month ago.
