NEW ARTIST MAKES DEBUT. The Wentworth management is confident that it has found a rising star in Peggy Petite, the latest in cabaret artists to be discovered in our gay city. Peggy commenced quietly, but last night, at the gala dinner, showed herself to be a cabaret dancer of first brilliance. Peggy Petite can dance, looks pretty, and has a happy knack of making friends by creating that intimate atmosphere between patrons and artists. As she skips from table to table one feels that this piquant little girl is speaking to everyone individually. This is the secret of her success, and the success of every cabaret artist. The sympathy created beween the performer and the onlooker - personality - is the thing that counts most.

Peggy Petite might be Peggy Buxom by todays standards? She looks very young but then that was the norm in the '20's.

I know where you're going with the Petite vs. Buxom, but that's not exactly the right word here, since we're judging by her legs noting they are not "rail thin" and that word is associate with ... other body parts. The thinness of too many public figures today seems driven by imitation of fashion models, but back to the 20's. This was the age of the flapper which was a period when thin was the style, but as you observe, thinness maybe wasn't as thin as today. As to young, I'm wondering if the short hair with the styled curls would NOT have been associated with (teenagers and younger) youth at the time. This gelled short hair may have said "style". She was going for a youthful persona judging from review with its line "piquant little girl" and she may have been accomplishing that effectively with a more narrow use of lipstick and the high waist and "ruffles" of her skirt. Maybe she is a forerunner of the cartoon character Betty Boop.

Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons Ha! I didn't realize [http://www.flickr.com/photos/51979177@N02] got their first! I think Peggy Petite must have been a stage name - I wonder what her real name was, and what happened to her?

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/51979177@N02] Suggestion noted. So Vernon & Patsie appear in the newspapers in January 1928, Peggy Petite's portrait is April 1927. The number on Phyllis Baker's negative is 4134 and her image appears early - in March 1927. So the Hall numbers could be chronological. It's quite possible Vernon & Patsie had a history of performing together - the article mentioned they were both engaged on the 'Fuller Circuit'.

pennylrichardsca (now at ipernity) Absolutely agree! We have a few portraits of this beauty, same hairstyle & most have what appears to be the word 'Petite' on the negative. I wonder if this is a clue to her identity? Maybe one day we will find out :)
