Remember that this was before the days of interstate highway travel. Every trip was an adventure...without rest room equipped buses.

"From the ninth floor of the General Motors Building on West 58th Street, Abbott photographed Columbus Circle through the back of a Schenley Rye neon sign mounted on the seven-story New York Journal Building. "The Circle's statue of Columbus, built in 1892 to commemorate the quadricentennial of his ocean voyage, occupies the center of the photograph, but it is dwarfed by an even more popular landmark, the Coca-Cola sign standing atop the American Circle Building (1915). "The sign contained a half-mile of tubing, 3,000 incandescent lamps, and five miles of wire compressed into an area of 80 x 50 feet. " — more: Museum of the City of New York

That half-timbered building is Rowley's House. It's now the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery There was a pet shop somewhere off to the right of this shot. My sister used to send gerbils unaccompanied on the Vaggs bus from Oswestry to sell there and the conductor would bring her the money back. She was aged 10 or 11 at the time and got about 40p a gerbil.

The two double-decker buses prominent in the scene are BMMO D5 types introduced in 1949 with production ending in 1952, built and operated by the Midland Red Bus company. the single deckers are also built and operated by the company.

Brings back very fond memories for me worked at Pets Corner in Mardol that was very close to this bus station.
