My first thought when I saw this was the "Grainneuaile" which for many years was the CIL's ship but this might be a bit too early for that? I had occasion to be grateful for one of these beasts back in the early seventies. I was coaching a shool's crew on the Shannon estuary and the outboard motor on our coaching boat broke down with the tide going out. We were heading for the Atlantic at a rate of knots but managed to get a line onto one of those while the lads went back up to the club and got the second boat with new motor out and came back down for us. Sitting in the boat with the rush of water going past for a couple of hours impressed on us the power of the water and how lucky we were to have had that buoy to hold onto!

Seen again here - catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000742841/ - which shows the ship's bell at full megazoom. I think it says 'ALEXANDRA 1904', which operated between 1904 and 1955 according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commissioners_of_Irish_Lights#Other... So earliest date is 1904. So far.

In the other photo, the lady in a beret near the ship's bell looks very 1930s +. Is she holding a camera? I am not sure how buoys work. Do they have to refuel, repair and replace them?
