That's how I would imagine someone named 'Ivan Matutoff' would look like...

But Mamutoff was in the news already in November, 1913, a few weeks before the Bain News Agency circulated this photo to its subscribers. Story in the "New York Evening Telegram," November 13, 1913: RUSSIAN GIANT WRESTLER HERE; HOPES TO MEET GOTCH Ivan Mamutoff of St. Petersburg, a Russian soldier of the Tsar's bodyguard and an expert wrestler, arrived here today on board the steamship Ryndam, having secured a special leave of absence of six months for a tour of the United States and Canada, during which he is desirous of meeting the world's champion wrestler, Frank Gotch. Manutoff is thirty-one years old, six feet four inches in height, and weighs 245 pounds. Four years ago he threw Geoge Hackenschmidt and Johan Kock in Graeco-Roman matches. (In the photo above, Mamutoff is posed before a weirdly-painted backdrop that appears to be leaning against a wall -- perhaps in a photographer's studio?)

The cartridge (not bullet) on the left is the .303 British. The cartridge was used by British forces in rifles and machine guns from 1888 until it was supplanted by the 7.62 NATO cartridge in the 1950s. Also, the spelling of the German should be Panzerbuechse. (The "u" should have an umlaut, but "ue" is a correct substitute.) I don't seem to be able to create an umlaut in Flickr.

Notice that he signed this like a promotional picture. Not surprising, since he was quite media-savvy for his day, having starred as himself in a movie which helped propel him into legend.
