The 2000 edition of Nathan Silver's Lost New York captions Abbott's picture as follows: "HOUSES WITH PITCHED ROOFS. 'A great number of excellent private dwellings are built of red painted brick, which gives them a peculiary neat and clean appearance,' a London visitor to New York wrote in 1819. The characteristic house was two or three stories high, sometimes twenty-five feet wide, two rooms deep, with a pitched roof and delicate dormers. These, built long before the Civil War, were at 512-514 Broome Street, and are now gone." Perhaps they aren't gone, though. Doulgas Levere's 1998 rephotograph of the same site shows two small buildings in the same location, albeit with the dormers--and in 512's case, a whole story--removed. Google Maps shows yet another wrinkle: 514 had a story added since 1998.

In the NY Times of March 19, 1922: "500 HEALTH HIKERS GET HYLAN SEND-OFF Mayor, Dr. Copeland and Other Officials Watch Start From City Hall. MANY FALL OUT ON WAY Others Join Marchers, With Central Park as Goal—Woman Heads for Albany. There were probably a thousand persons crowded in front of the City Hall yesterday afternoon when the first of a series of health hikes under the leadership of Captain Godfrey Rodrigues, a physical instructor, of Holland, started. .... At least 500 followed the instructor across the park and into Lafayette Street."

According to The New York herald. [volume], March 19, 1922, Page 3, col. 2, only 52 people took part in the hike (instead of 300'000) chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045774/1922-03-19/ed-...

E.V. Haughwout Building a.k.a. 488-492 Broadway/440 Broome Street (John P. Gaynor/Daniel D. Badger, 1856-1857): One of the most famous cast-iron buildings in the world. Former location of E.V. Haughwout & Co., a dry-goods company that supplied china to the Pierce and Lincoln presidencies, and the world's first passenger elevator.
