The anticipated 1916 Summer Olympics, which were to be officially known as the Games of the VI Olympiad, were to have been held in Berlin, Germany. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, organization continued as no one anticipated that the war would continue for several years. Eventually, though, the Games were canceled. Alexandria and Budapest had bid unsuccessfully for the 1916 Games. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1916_Summer_Olympics Work on the stadium began in 1912. The opening ceremony was on June 8, 1913. I will add the new information from the New York Times to Wikipedia.

The German word "Turner" means gymnast. The name of the Mission Turn Hall in San Francisco, built in 1910 near the time of this photo, is another example of how the German word was borrowed into English. Sedan Day is described at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedantag It was a holiday in Germany on September 2nd, last celebrated in 1918, celebrating their defeat of France at Sedan in 1870 in the Franco-Prussian war. The significance in 1914, was that Germany was at war again and hoping for another such victory.

That's Unter den Linden, you can see the Zeughaus. The soldiers are from the prussian Gardekorps, but from different regiments: The marching infantrymen are Grenadiers or Fusiliers, the two officers on horse are from artillery (note their helmets).
