OSI: maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,463874,542822,11,7 There's a gap in the 25", so we can't see what the barrier in the sea is, or whether there's a fish saltery there. Perhaps they're smuggling toffee in barrels.

Stuart The two figures are wearing distinctively west-cork caps, while the man is sporting a type of moustache common to the Castletownbere area. The barrels are of the rope tied type favoured to the west of Castletownbere over the more expensive iron bound examples used by the poshos to the east. More prosaically, it looks like west Cork, and a quick scan of the OSI does the rest. It took three or four goes, since I started in Glengarriff and searched west, so a certain amount of luck involved.

The hills look Kerryesque...

Mike I think Woesinger is right in the notes, that struck me as a tidal area past the last of the houses and the feel I got from it was as Niall McAuley says, very Kerryesque. Were they firkins of butter I wonder or barrels of stout? Nice photograph and the keystone image is very unusual.

I've a feeling this is Castletownbere.... Not quite the same viewpoint, but the layout and pub is similar. maps.google.ie/?ll=51.651525,-9.910526&spn=0.007003,0... Corroborating evidence (which is what put me on to Castletownbere) - in 1901, there was a Daniel Moriarty, shopkeeper, living in Castletownbere. On further investigation, he did indeed own a public house. www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Killaconen... Very circumstantial, but the layout of the town, the background and the pub seem to match.

Woesinger That looks very like it alright. The estuary appears closer in the old shot but it looks just right. Is that Kingstons on the left of the picture? Perhaps we can verify it from that? The boat is the Ovoca built in 1908 in Arklow, later fishing out of Balbriggan.

Scenery looks pretty rugged - further West than Arklow, I'd say. I note a coastguard station with flagstaff.

Taken at Castletownbere I'd say - This part of the harbour is now filled in, but that's the Workhouse in the background and the profile of the hill matches the modern Streetview www.google.ie/maps/@51.6508038,-9.9102059,3a,75y,80.01h,8...

The Coastguard station in the photo wasn't there when the 25" Ordnance Survey map was created, so that may provide some dating evidence. The NIAH suggest it was built circa 1910, so this photo must be later. www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&...
