This appears to be Boeing Air Transport's Boeing Model 80A, registered NC227M, c/n 1085. Construction Number "1089" belonged to NC231M, which this is not, as evidenced by the number on top of the starboard wing. The registration NC221M belonged to a Fairchild KR-34C.

Boeing Model 80 (early) Boeing Air Transport, probably one of the four machines registered NC7135-38? Note the small nose window, uncowled nose engine, and exposed control lines and bellcranks, also seen to good effect in the Boeing photo below, which also shows the single tail, later changed to a triple fin.

It carried the first all-through air mail from England to New Zealand, with covers being stamped at Mildenhall, Melbourne and Palmerston North. Squadron Leader J D Hewitt, Flying Officer C E Kay and Frank Steward were the first to fly between Great Britain and New Zealand. The official time for the flight was 12hrs 9min, and the average speed was about 130mph. (Manawatu Heritage)
