This is a strange one!

This really looks to be the original Kenmare House in Killarney, which was demolished in 1872! This house was on the site of the modern Killarney House, and that looks very like St. Mary's in town behind it.

The house which replaced it (and burned down in 1913) was very different, and nowhere near St. Mary's.

Could this be as early as 1872?

Niall McAuley I was completely befuddled by the history of the various Kenmore / Killarney Houses and two St Mary's churches-with-spires. This photo must be before 1872, unless that demolition date is wrong. It seems odd to demolish a house which looks to be in good condition.

Queen Victoria and Prince Alfred stayed here in 1861, and she chose the site of the new Killarney House. The chimneys were made of marble (rose-coloured and grey and black) ... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenmare_House

Saint Mary's in the background was only built in 1870, giving a very short window for this image!

Thanks Niall McAuley. In honesty I have confused myself trying to understand the location and history of "Killarney House" and "Kenmare House", but I wonder if this is actually the former. IE: The former (seemingly also known as "Knockreer House") is located between Mission Rd and Ross Rd in Killarney proper and would have been close enough to St Mary's for the spire view. If it is that building, then this image could have been taken before the first fire in 1879, or perhaps between that and the second fire in 1913. (I think I've confused myself with the various "houses beginning with K", but I think it's feasible that this image dates from the middle of the catalogue range...)

National Library of Ireland on The Commons First there was Kenmare House, this one, link to the 1830s 6", built in 1726. This was replaced by Killarney House (here on the 25") in 1872, at which time this one was demolished, except for the stable block. Then Killarney house burnt down twice. After the second time, in 1913, the Earl had the stable block converted into a house, which he named Kenmare House (1930s 6"). At this time, Killarney House was a ruin. Then in 1956 Mrs. Grosvenor built Knockreer house where Killarney House used to stand, and sold Kenmare house to an American, who renamed it Killarney House.

On 3rd September 1907 and the four following days, the "complete, elegant and costly appointments of the Glenmore Hotel, Rostrevor" were put up for auction (Newry Reporter - Tuesday 27 August 1907). The owner selling was Mrs O'Leary, and the new owner was a Mr Collen or Collins (the Newry Reporter couldn't make up its mind)

I wonder if the photo was commissioned as part of the sales literature provided to potential buyers?
[On reflection, probably not, as the auctioneers R. M. Gray were a Belfast company. Would they commission a Dublin photographer?]

Edit: But ... the catalogue for the sale had "a capital view of the picturesque mansion on the cover". There were 1200 lots.

John Spooner I'd say this was just a normal workaday shot for Robert French, roaming photographer. Though people often bought Lawrence prints for their own use/enjoyment...

It was blown up/down on 14 March 1973.

Streetview shows that the avenue of monkey puzzlers has grown considerably at the site.

Dates from 1840, per the DIA The statue was by Thomas Kirk, who did indeed also do Nelson atop his Dublin Pillar.
