PRA Appleton was born in Hulme, Manchester on 8 June 1891 and a according to the 1891 Census His parents were James & Marthar Appleton who lived at 4 Mercer Street, Hulme at the time of the census they had two other children 1 boy and 1 girl and James Appleton was a commercial traveller

The building in the back is New York Public Library, at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Joseph H. Choate and William W. Appleton were both Trustees named in the first year of the New York Free Circulating Library. This photo may have been taken at the opening of NYPL in 1911.

(Portland, Ore.) 1881-current, February 23, 1913, SECTION FIVE, Image 65 with the caption "Robert Appleton is the head of the Robert Appleton Company, which has Just completed the publication of the monumental Catholic Cyclopedia. He is one of the governors of the New York Athletic Club and member of many other clubs and societies in New York, and is an enthusiastic motorist and golf player."
