From the Supplement to the Edinburgh Gazette dated 25 January 1916: Award of the Military Cross to Lieutenant George Philip Burlton, 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment. For conspicuous gallantry on the night of 1st December, 1915, near Mametz. When a German mine was exploded he went to the spot, was lowered down the shaft, and by his personal endeavour and example was largely instrumental in saving the lives of several unconscious men.//

George Philip Burlton was born in Imperal India. Born 26 August 1896 in West Bengal. Father William Erle Ferdinand Burlton. Mother Minnie Edith Burlton. He was Christened on 2 October 1896 at Murree in West Bengal. His father was, in 1881, a junior officer in the Militia Artillery at Waterford.

Was promoted to Temporary Captain on 17 Jan 1916 [LG 29513 of 17 Mar 1916] (reverted to Temp Lt on 9 Feb 1916 [LG 29537 of 4 Apr 1916]), to Temporary Captain again on 3 Apr 1916 [LG of 30 Jun 1916] (reverted again to Temp Lt the day that he was reported missing 4 Jun 1916 [LG 29561 of 4 Jul 1916]).//
