This is Manhattan's Hudson River piers, around Pier 88. The French Line terminal is towards the right, next to what appears to be a capsized ship.

The capsized ship in the photo above is the SS Normandie (USS Lafayette (AP-53)), well into the salvage and righting process, as her superstructure has already been removed. This has always been the most significant photo of any Ocean Liners to me. They have it hanging on the Queen Mary right as you step on board now. Many people don't understand the gravity of this picture.

This would be around the 9th March, 1940, at the end of the Queen Elizabeth's maiden voyage from the Clyde to New York. Thereafter she went to Singapore to be converted into her wartime troopship role. Indeed the only time all three ships were together.
