This ANZAC Day eve 1939 reunion dinner was addressed by the Minister for External Affairs William Hughes. Hughes had been Prime Minister of Australia in the latter stages of the First World War. Here is the Sydney Morning Herald's account of this dinner: nla.gov.au/nla.news-article17592394 By April 1939 the Second World War had not yet begun, but could be foreseen, as Hughes said in his speech. Hughes is the man on the right hand side of the two men standing at the head table.
