Wofford / Wilmas [i.e., Welmas] (LOC)

The name of the player on the right is "Wilmas", not "Williams". These may be members of the Carlisle Industrial School for Indians 1914 football team. . A write up in the New York Times of a game played between Carlisle and Brown on November 26, 1914 mentioned the names of Carlisle players named Wofford and Wallmas (or Welmas, spelled both ways in the article). At that time, the coach of Carlisle was Glenn "Pop" Warner. The date written at the top of both these photos is 11/14/14. On November 14, 1914, Carlisle played Notre Dame in Chicago, a game which the Indians lost 48-6.

Thanks for catching the typo and pointing out alternate spellings of the name, as well as the date. We'll add information to the record when we update.

Yes, it's pretty clear these are players on the "Carlisle Indians" football team of 1914, coached by the not-yet-legendary Pop Warner. The monument to Warner on the Stanford campus: www.flickr.com/photos/wallyg/4017400485/

Jesse Wofford (mentioned as a 17 year old player) and Phil Welmas (this seems to be the actual spelling) are mentioned in this article about a game with Cornell:

These fellas looked more sturdy than the average man of that era. I can see why they would make good football players.
