  Maybe not surprising that the image was not for publication as the pure number of ambulances might give rise to speculation as to the numbers of casualties they might have to carry.....

  These are fascinating images and I thank the team that gathered, scanned, and captioned them. I would like to point out that whilst images were used for 'propaganda' purposes we should remember that the taking of photographs was an important method of chronicling the activities of a near-million man army, by far the largest organised group of British people ever formed.

  beachcomber - if you look closely you will notice that the officer closest to camera is dressed differently, obviously not a driver but a senior member of the service. I'd say it's the boss.

  Steve Pearson Hey, you are right! And the ambulances are right-hand drive. And all different. The Persistent URL says this is 1938. The ambulances had been fitted with "wireless telephone equipment" a couple of years before - SMH 11/01/1936, p.16 - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/17237868 Also I found out exactly where this was - under Central Station. Google Maps Street View - g.co/maps/xfutv
