  Hi OrangeCats- Thank you for the contemporary photo of Remak, who seems as though he led a very interesting life. It seems as though he was a professor emeritus of comparative literature and Germanic and Western European Studies at Indiana University when he died in 2009, and as you note escaped Nazi Germany as a young man: "Remak was born in 1916 into a Jewish family in Germany. He left Nazi Germany at the age of 20 in 1936 to reside in Bloomington. The YMCA program found him a Jewish fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu, where he could stay for free, and the rest of his family soon followed, just escaping the Holocaust."   I just happened across this and thought I would update that we hold Dr. Remak's papers at the Indiana University Archives and have begun tackling them! Our graduate student working on the project will periodically provide updates on her progress on our blog at blogs.libraries.iub.edu/iubarchives/. Sadly, I never met Dr. Remak but I did work closely with his wife and one of his sons in packing up his office. By all accounts, he was a truly remarkable man.
