Misspelled Valparaiso
Here's the aircraft in another SDASM photo
Initially designed as a seaplane, the UO-1 was soon classified as “convertible,” using interchangeable single-main float or wheeled-landing gear (these UO-1’s were designated UO-1C). First flown in the fall of 1922, the UO-1’s entered service with the U.S.S. Richmond in 1923. As their superiority over potential competing types became evident, they became the only observation type in use on the fleet’s catapult-equipped combat ships. The 15 first-class battleships were each equipped with one or more UO-1’s. Two or more UO-1’s were used aboard each of the new scout cruisers comprising the Navy’s scouting fleet. www.vought.org/products/html/uo-1.html
Barbed wire, Shanghai (LOC)

The date scribbled on the negative is April 13 1927, corresponding to a time of unrest and the day after the so-called "Shanghai Massacre." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_massacre As usual with the Bain photos, the scribbled date doesn't necessarily correspond to the date the photo was taken. But it does correspond to a time when unrest and barbed wire in Shanghai would have been in the news.

Henry Sara, of Britain, visited China in early 1927, to attend the 5th Congress of the Communist Party of China at Hankow. See his collection of lantern slides at warwick.ac.uk/services/library/mrc/explorefurther/digital.... There is one of 'Building barricades" that has barbed wire like this in the background.

swanq The -16 at the end of the item call number (5615-16) generally corresponds to 1927 or thereabouts. There seems to have been later additions to call numbers from prior years in the Bain collection. To be more clear, if the 5615 series ran to 10 or 12, years later Bain seems to have added others, 13 to 18. I'm now thinking it might have been a function of physical storage. Maybe there was a lot of room at the end of each series in the cabinets holding the glass negatives, and they decided to just fill in the space by putting new negatives in the empty space and continuing the series numbering.

Thanks swanq and Art Siegel. We'll add that date to the catalog record.
