What a great image - I wonder where it is?

Yes, it's rather ominous, isn't it, especially with that shadowy figure of the lone guard. This photo is in a run of other gaol images, various gaols (one unidentified) and then a series of unidentified interiors. You can see the others under Photo Investigator -> Subject Search -> P -> Prisons AB

Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection Thanks for that link - I see that there is another unidentified gaol interior with similar fittings but three floors. Both have barrel vault ceilings, which might provide a clue - most gaols seem to have hipped roofs. investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/asp/photosearch/photo.asp...

I think the three level photo and possibly this one too, may be Goulburn Gaol. See middle photo at the bottom of this page - www.heritage.nsw.gov.au/07_subnav_01_2.cfm?itemid=5000652 . That would also date the photo as 1884, or if it the new wing 1893.

Does Main Street go along the train tracks, or does it cross them? If Main crosses the tracks, are we facing the east side of Main?
