The Tyrrell Historical Library is a unique library in that it collects and preserves the history of the greater Beaumont area, which includes the history of southeast Texas. The library as a historical research repository was established in 1975. Restoration of the library building began in 1989 and was completed in July of 1990. The local history archives section of the library consists of personal papers, business, civic, fraternal, and city records. The collections capture a wide array of material including family letters, journals, diaries, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, business reports, minutes and correspondence, along with thousands of photographs.

Thanks! The library building was in fact originally the home of the First Baptist Church of Beaumont. In 1923, when the church needed a larger space, Captain W. C. Tyrrell purchased this building from them and donated it to the city for use as its first public library.
