This is a picture of the Grand Hotel on the Yokohama Bund. The hotel, as with most other buildings in Yokohama, was destroyed in the Kanto Earthquake in 1923. The hotel was re-built and the Grand Hotel still stands in the same place. The water in front of the hotel has been reclaimed and is now Yamashita Park.

This is a picture of the Yokahama Bund looking East, most likely in the 1880s. On the Bund were the Grand Hotel (see next picture), the US Consul General and various foreign trading houses. Yokohama was at the time a treaty port, and this section of Yokohama was reserved for foreigners to live in.

Mississipi Bay, Negishi in Japanese, is over the hill to the south of the centre of Yokohama. The bay was called Mississipi after Commodore Perry's flagship. Many foreign residents came to Negishi for picnics and days out. Some moved to Negishi even though it was outside the foreign settlement. The area has now been reclaimed and an expressway runs through it.

This picture shows the Grand Hotel from behind and Yokohama Harbour. Yokohama was at the time a treaty port and the major trading port for foreigners in Japan. The ships in harbour will have been the ships of the various treaty powers, come to trade.
