May have been taken around the time of Edward VII's coronation, or his visit to the city to open the King Edward VII railway bridge in 1906. Hence all the bunting.

Excellent photo this. I followed the restoration of The Buttress on the other side of the steps from this building and recorded it inside and out with photographs. A good bunch of lads involved with that project..

Newcastle City Library flkr phtostream states this was taken in July 1884 on Westgate Road, who is right?

Johnson Hedley (1851-1913) was the younger brother of Tyneside artist and woodcarver Ralph Hedley (1848-1913), . Johnson was also an artist, as well as a confectionary wholesaler and retailer, and he specialised in landscape paintings.
